When I taught Algebra 2 a couple of years ago I had a student who
was smart, but very lazy. At the first of the last six weeks he
said, "The lowest grade you can give me is a 50 even if I do
nothing, right? So with a 50 for this six weeks I will still pass
your class because my average will be 72. Cool." The only reason
he had worked previously was so that he could pass the TAKS.
That's why a teacher would at least like the option of giving a
lower grade.
