Google "fuzzy math" and you will see what the C-Scope math
curriculum is based on.
In Grades 7-8 all work is estimation. I presume that is because
the TAKS tests at those grade levels do not ask for computation
type answers. But in my opinion students learn to estimate when
they are skillful at computation, not before. It has been a
frustrating experience for me and my students. It is very labor
intensive for the teacher. Worksheet after worksheet to be
copied. The tests are apparently from WEBCATT. They have
little to do with what we have been studying.
I know young teachers that hate it, too. But experienced
teachers are not allowed to criticize because you are shut up
with the statement--"Yes, they told us experienced teachers
don't like change." Young teachers are told that they are too
inexperienced to understand. What a clever con that is!
In math, it is a nightmare. I have taught it exactly as it is
written and found that my students are confused and becoming
upset and angry. No homework, no quizzes, 1-2 tests a six
weeks. Ridiculous when I have new books, workbooks,
transparencies, powerpoints, videos, in the closet. All are
TAKS correlated.
I hear that some schools have ditched the lesson plans and just
use the scope and sequence. What a ridiculous waste of money
for a scope and sequence!!
I just hope someone with courage and power will finally call it
what it is--garbage--before it becomes a state mandate.
